TWU’s Contribution to the Nation: The Honorable Career and Service of Chancellor Jerri Bryant

     In the courtroom, order presides.

Long before she took her place on the bench, Jerri S. Bryant was a student walking the campus of Tennessee Wesleyan, building the foundation for her future that would shape a lifetime of service.

Graduating in 1984 with a degree in history, Bryant left Tennessee Wesleyan with a passion for leadership and order. She continued her educational journey at the Tennessee College of Law, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1987 before quickly stepping into the legal profession.

Her early years in private practice laid the groundwork for what would become a distinguished career. From her work at Claiborne, Davis, Buck, & Hurley to her role as a partner at Carter, Harrod, & Cunningham in Athens, Bryant simultaneously gained important experience while also building a reputation grounded in phenomenal leadership.

In 1998, that path led her to the bench, where she began her service as Chancellor of Tennessee’s Tenth Judicial District.

For more than two decades, Chancellor Bryant has brought legal expertise and thoughtful, passionate leadership to the judiciary. Her influence extends far beyond the courtroom. Through her work with the Tennessee Judicial Conference — including serving as President — and her involvement with organizations such as the Tennessee Trial Judge’s Association, she has helped shape the legal landscape across the state of Tennessee.

Chancellor Bryant’s commitment to growth and excellence is evident in her continued pursuit of knowledge, from her certification as a Rule 31 General Civil Mediator to her training through the National Judicial College, yet her story is not defined by her professional accomplishments alone.

Deeply rooted in service, Chancellor Bryant has dedicated herself to her community in meaningful ways. From serving on the Tennessee Wesleyan University Board of Trustees to supporting organizations like the Athens Kiwanis Club and the HOPE Center for Domestic Violence, Chancellor Bryant consistently devotes her time to serving those in her community. Within her church, Keith Memorial United Methodist, she has also been a steady leader, further reflecting her lifelong commitment to faith and service.

Her impact has not gone unnoticed. Honors such as the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award and the Adoption Ambassador Award stand as recognition of a life devoted not just to justice but even more deeply to people.

Today, Chancellor Bryant’s legacy continues to grow not just in courtrooms but also in the lives she influences along the way.

At Tennessee Wesleyan University, we are proud to call her one of our own. As part of “TWU’s Gift to America,” Chancellor Jerri S. Bryant represents the enduring impact of our Bulldog family, demonstrating not only a legacy of achievement but also of meaningful, lifelong service.
