Instructors do have virtual office hours and students are welcome to schedule time to meet with instructors virtually, if needed.
Online Technology Requirements
TECHNICAL LITERACY:
At minimum, students should:
• have an understanding of basic computer usage (creating folders/directories, switching between programs, formatting and backing up media, accessing the Internet).
• be able to use a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word) to create, edit, save, and retrieve documents. MS Word is provided free of charge to all TWU students.
• be able to use a Web browser to open Web pages, open PDF files, manage a list of Web pages (bookmarks/favorites), post to blogs and/or discussion boards, participate in chats, and search the Internet.
• be able to use an email program to send, receive, store, and retrieve messages.
• be able to download, install, and utilize basic software applications obtained from Internet sources.
HARDWARE & SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
This is a technology-based course. Students enrolled in this course are expected to complete assignments which require a higher level of technical capability than your average class. In order to effectively complete assignments, students should have access to a modern desktop or laptop computer with MS Office and should have regular access to a broadband internet connection.
EMERGENCY OR INTERRUPTION IN COMPUTER SERVICE
Prepare for unexpected problems and emergencies. Understand that problems and glitches do occur in electronic mediums, as they do in any learning environment. Have a back-up plan for completing course work, such as using the computers at a local library, in case your computer crashes or your service is interrupted.
In addition, students are encouraged to save backup copies of any assignments posted online. Legitimate system outages of Canvas, should they occur, will be taken into consideration; should a system outage occur, revert to email or other means of communication with the instructor to ensure continued course progress.
Cost/TN Dual Enrollment Grant
The Dual Enrollment Grant (DEG) through the state of Tennessee covers the cost of a student’s first five dual enrollment courses at Tennessee Wesleyan University. For courses 6-10, the DEG provides $100 per credit hour, making each three-hour course cost $213 which will be covered in full by TWU, meaning no course costs for TWU courses outside of textbooks for their first 10 DE courses.
Courses 1-5
No Cost
Cost fully covered by Dual Enrollment Grant (student must apply for DEG)
Courses 6-10
No Cost (unique to TWU)
Cost partially covered by Dual Enrollment Grant (student must apply for DEG), partially covered by TWU*.
*In order for classes 6-10 taken with TWU to be covered in full, the student must remain eligible for the Dual Enrollment Grant. Students must submit a new TN Dual Enrollment Grant application each year. If student does not qualify for the grant or falls below DE Grant GPA requirements, student may owe a balance. Classes 6-10 means up to 10 total dual enrollment courses. If student takes courses at other institutions outside TWU, they count toward the students first 10 classes. For classes 6-10, TWU will cover the $213 difference only for courses taken through TWU.
