TWU Announces Plans for Ingleside School Site, Honoring Legacy, Creating New Opportunities for Community

Tennessee Wesleyan University is excited to announce its plans to breathe new life into the former Ingleside School location. Recognizing the deep historical and personal significance of Ingleside for generations of Athens residents, TWU is committed to honoring its legacy while directing the site toward a renewed future that benefits the entirety of the Athens community.

After careful evaluation, the former Ingleside School building has been deemed infeasible for repair due to extensive structural and maintenance needs. The Athens City School System previously vacated the facility for these same reasons, and it was determined that preservation of the existing structure was not a viable option due to the building’s current condition. TWU understands that this reality is difficult for those who have strong connections to the school, and the decision has been made only after thoughtful consideration and careful structural examination, with demolition set to occur in the near future.

In recognition of Ingleside’s significant place in the community’s history, TWU will preserve key elements of the school’s legacy. Plans include recreating the iconic original arch entryway facing Guille Street as part of the new development, ensuring a visible and meaningful tribute to the generations who passed through its doors. Additionally, TWU will offer the community an opportunity to tour the building on March 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., allowing former students, families, and neighbors to revisit and reflect on their memories. At a later date, a limited opportunity will also be provided for individuals to obtain a brick from the original structure as a keepsake.

Looking ahead, TWU will continue to explore fundraising opportunities that support the potential future transformation of the site into a multi-sport facility designed to serve both the University and the broader Athens community. When funding is secured, the new space will support youth sports and recreational programming in order to bring new life, activity, and purpose to a property that has been shuttered for years. Once secured, this investment represents a significant improvement to the area and reflects TWU’s ongoing commitment to being a positive partner in the community.

When completed, this project will further complement the recreational amenities along Ingleside Avenue, including the City of Athens’ continued investments in the area. Nearby enhancements such as the newly renovated tennis and pickleball facilities, along
with plans for a new park across the street near the Mayfield Visitor Center, will collectively create expanded opportunities for recreation, tourism, and community engagement.

“While we honor the past, we also have a responsibility to look forward,” Dr. Tyler Forrest, president of Tennessee Wesleyan University, explained. “Our goal is to preserve the memories, the meaning, and the impact of this cherished location while also creating a space that will serve today’s families and future generations.”

TWU is grateful for the community’s passion and engagement and looks forward to continuing open, respectful dialogue as this project progresses. Together, this next chapter at Ingleside will honor its history while creating new opportunities for connection.

For additional information about brick availability and other updates regarding the project, community members are encouraged to watch for future announcements from Tennessee Wesleyan University.
