Where Love Took the Field: A TWU Love Story
Some love stories begin quietly in the midst of ordinary moments – between classes, athletics practices, or meals in the dining hall. At Tennessee Wesleyan University, one such story began when two student-athletes arrived on campus on completely different paths, unaware that the place shaping their college experience would also bring them together.
Melasawn came to Tennessee Wesleyan University to play basketball. Johnny came to play football. Known on campus as “Dynamite Johnny Knight,” he was a standout fullback. While Johnny was highly talented, it was his confidence, kindness, and unmistakable smile that truly set him apart.
Their story began in a sociology classroom. As she walked through the door of Mr. Thompson’s class, she’d hear her name – “Melasawn” – called out with the sweetest tease. Johnny would often tell his friends, “I’m going to marry that girl.” Before long, Melasawn learned that the legendary “old man” on the football team was Johnny himself. Johnny was a hardworking, nontraditional student who was five years Melasawn’s senior, who had saved money diligently to be able to attend college.
It did not take long for Melasawn and Dynamite Johnny Knight to become inseparable, fully embracing life together as a Tennessee Wesleyan college couple.
Like true Bulldogs, their love was marked by strength, loyalty, and indefinite resilience. Even when life brought unimaginable challenges, including Johnny’s diagnosis of a rare cancer, love always led the way for Johnny and Melasawn.
On May 1, 1993, surrounded by friends, teammates, and the campus community that had become family, Melasawn and Johnny were married in the heart of campus during the spring football game. With the fountain flowing and white flowers in bloom, the Tennessee Wesleyan quad became the setting for a celebration of love, unity, and Bulldog pride – one that many still remember fondly to this day.
Though Melasawn and Johnny came to Tennessee Wesleyan from different places, TWU (then TWC) quickly became their home. The couple chose to stay in McMinn County, where they built a life together, raised three incredible children, and shared 13 and a half years filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable memories until Johnny lost his battle with cancer.
Tennessee Wesleyan University will forever hold a special place in Melasawn’s heart – not only as the place where her journey began but as the place where she met the love of her life.
At TWU, the bonds formed go far beyond the classroom or the field. Sometimes, they last a lifetime, because once you are a Bulldog, you are family – and some Bulldog bonds are forever.
