Level Up: TWU Students Decode the Real Impact of Online Gaming on Communication

What happens when you mix research, curiosity, and a controller? Tennessee Wesleyan University’s Multimedia Journalism students set out to answer that very question this past semester, wrapping up a deep dive into how online gaming shapes the way students communicate.

After a semester-long research journey, students successfully gathered 120 survey responses with the support of the campus community, and this led the students to uncovering three key findings, shedding light on how gaming influences connection and conversation among today’s students.

The project goes beyond stereotypes often associated with gaming, instead highlighting its role as a dynamic communication tool. From teamwork in competitive environments to building friendships across digital spaces, the research reveals that online gaming can foster meaningful interaction in ways that mirror—and sometimes even enhance—real-world communication.

Students from the class captured their findings in a story they wrote for the student-led news source, Bulldog Beat. The final story brings the research to life through a multimedia approach, including a video component that captures both the data and the student perspective behind the project.
