Honors Program Celebrates Continued Growth
Story by Alex Thompson and Will Murray
On the heels of the University’s record-breaking enrollment, TWU’s Honors Program welcomed its largest class to date. With students coming from across the United States in majors diverse as business, sports journalism, history, and english, this year’s Honors cohort adds to a flourishing academic community at TWU.
Now in its third year, the TWU Honors program provides a community for students who want to explore big questions alongside dedicated classmates and talented professors. More than just a scholarly organization, the Honors Program illustrates how pursuing wisdom and growth can be as much fun as it is challenging. If you spend a day with the Honors students, what you will see is not only a talented group of individuals but also a community that truly enjoys each other’s company. Whether it is a brief lunch conversation or a week-long trip to the Czech Republic, the Honors students relish any opportunity to gather and spend time with one another.
The incoming Honors students were welcomed to TWU and into the Honors Program with a dinner at Dr. Alex Thompson’s house. They were joined by more than 30 Honors students and TWU faculty members, including President Tyler Forest. This fall, the incoming students also worked together for TWU’s Day of Service, hosted a movie night, attended a play, and are organizing a Friendsgiving dinner—to name a few of their many activities.
The new students were also enrolled in a semester-long study on citizenship (HON101). The class combines readings from history, political science, sociology, environmental studies, and literature—all to explore the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Next semester, the Honors students will enjoy a host of social and academic activities, including a trip to Knoxville to attend an opera. They will also enroll in HON102, which will explore the topic of “the common good.”
If you or someone you know is interested in joining next year’s class, we encourage you to fill out an application as soon as possible. There is an early admission deadline of November 15th, and spots in the program are limited. Also, if you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to any of the Honors faculty listed on our homepage.
