Brown Interns with TBI Academy
Criminal Justice Major Represents TWU at Statewide TBI Program
For the second time in its five-year existence, a Tennessee Wesleyan University student has been selected to attend the highly prestigious Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Forensic Academy.
Tressie Brown, a rising senior majoring in criminal justice at TWU, participated in the intensive five-day boot camp designed to give students firsthand experience in the world of forensic science and criminal investigations. Held at the Tennessee Fire Services and Codes Enforcement Academy, the academy exposes students to real world techniques in areas such as crime scene investigation, fingerprinting, DNA testing, and forensic pathology.
Brown represented Tennessee Wesleyan University among a select group of college students from across the state. She was one of just 25 students chosen to attend the academy, selected from a competitive pool of nearly 200 applicants. To earn her spot in the academy, Brown underwent a rigorous application process that included personal statements, recommendation letters, and an interview with TBI agents.
“It was really cool to see some of the skills I’ve learned in class actually applied by the TBI,” Brown explained. “We discussed and practiced mass spectrometry at the academy, which is something I was already familiar with because of my chemistry class at TWU.”
Brown believes it was the support of criminal justice professor Cliff Couch that made her path to attending the forensic academy possible. She also believes that any TWU criminal justice student should apply for the TBI academy, citing that it was “a great, really fun experience” that helped to deepen her desire to one day work in the field of forensics.
Brown’s selection not only highlights her personal achievements but also reflects the strength of Tennessee Wesleyan’s criminal justice program and its commitment to providing students with real-world learning opportunities. As the TBI Forensic Academy continues to gain distinction, students like Brown serve as exemplary representatives of the university—demonstrating that with commitment, faculty support, and practical experience, obtaining a professional career in criminal justice is both attainable and well-supported by Tennessee Wesleyan University.
