President Knowles addresses Hiwassee closure, sends message of support to students and families

Thursday, March 28, 2019, a fellow United Methodist-affiliated institution, Hiwassee College made the difficult decision to close at the end of their spring semester. Upon notification of this announcement, our faculty and staff immediately began identifying ways Tennessee Wesleyan University could support their prospective and current student populations, as well as their alumni, during this transition.

I have spoken with Dr. Tricoili, and we are eager to work together to find her students a new college home that will honor the Hiwassee College legacy. Initiatives are already being discussed and implemented so both future and current students will feel supported during this time. Our faculty are beginning to analyze transfer credits in programs that we also offer, our admissions team will be on the Hiwassee campus Monday, April 1 to meet current students and will also spend additional time in area high schools.

Tennessee Wesleyan welcomes all Hiwassee students, current and future, to find a new home here in Athens. There is no application deadline, and we still have institutional scholarships available to help make the college experience affordable. For students, or families, interested in visiting our campus, please contact the Office of Admissions at 423-746-5286. I, personally, look forward to meeting you!

We will also look towards ways to assist the many Hiwassee College alumni as they too look for gathering place to celebrate their college years. Tennessee Wesleyan and Hiwassee administrators will continue discussions in the coming weeks so that the Hiwassee College family does not feel alone.

Our TWU family will continue to keep the students, faculty, staff and alumni in our prayers as this chapter closes for the college.

Dr. Harley Knowles
President, Tennessee Wesleyan University
