Pair of Faculty Share Recent Research

A pair of Tennessee Wesleyan University faculty had research published and accepted over the last several months, in addition to putting on the Epidemics of Amnesia symposium near the close of the spring semester.

Dr. Jack SeitzDr. Seitz in Agricultural History

Dr. Jack Seitz, Assistant Professor of History at TWU, was recently published in the current volume of Agricultural History.

The article, "Imagining Alfalfastan: Plant Exploration, Technopolitics, Colonialism, and the Environment in the American West and Russian Central Asia, 1897-1930," looks at the circulation of seeds, people, and expertise around growing alfalfa and how they connect the US Southwest, Great Plains, and Russian Central Asia.

“It was a lot of fun to write and research,” said Dr. Seitz, “and I think shows the promise of environmental history in some surprising ways and also raises some pretty important questions about agriculture, power, and the environment.”

The full article is available for free in the month August.

Dr. Tara PrairieDr. Prairie at the Tennessee Public Health Association Annual Conference

Dr. Tara Prairie, Assistant Professor of Health and Human Performance, had a trio of posters accepted to the 2021 Tennessee Public Health Association Annual Conference next month.

Posters included Tennessee county radon levels and un-insurance rates, as well as Maintaining physical wellness during a pandemic. Additionally, Dr. Prairie and her students' work in Cognitive mapping of COVID-19 views within the southeast was awarded a top 5 winner for best poster. Full citations are listed below.

Tennessee county radon levels and un-insurance rates, as well as Maintaining physical wellness during a pandemic were student led posters from the spring 2021 Research Principles and Techniques class.

Cognitive mapping of COVID-19 views within the southeast was a result of the fall 2020 Bioethics class, with students participating in cognitive mapping interviews as part of a course project.

Epidemics of Amnesia

Both Dr. Seitz and Dr. Prairie organized the Epidemics of Amnesia: Disease, Public Health and History Memory symposium back in April, with the keynote address given by Dr. Dale Lawrence. The recordings from all symposium sessions are now available online.
