TWU Celebrates Arbor Day 2020
Tennessee Wesleyan University has been selected once again for the Tree Campus USA designation, the eighth consecutive year the Athens campus has received the recognition.
Though the annual campus celebration was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Bulldog family, and anyone who wants to join, are being invited to celebrate Arbor Day this Friday, April 24.
We’re encouraging everyone to plant something, a tree, a plant, vegetables, flowers, whatever you want, and post a picture or video on social media with #TWUArborDay. TWU President Dr. Harley Knowles will be taking part with the planting of trees at the new University Square.
“As a campus, TWU takes great pride in providing a beautiful environment for our students to enjoy, while preserving many historic landmarks on campus, including our beautiful trees,” said Dr. Knowles. “Join us in continuing this tradition by planting something with us this Friday.”

To obtain this distinction, five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA must be met:
- Establishment of a tree advisory committee
- Evidence of a campus tree-care plan
- Dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program
- an Arbor Day observance
- The sponsorship of student service-learning projects
