Tennessee Wesleyan University’s Master of Arts in Teaching program has been developed specifically for career changers looking for that purpose.

The MAT program offers three areas of concentration:

Elementary Education K – 5
Secondary Biology, Chemistry, English, History, or Mathematics (6-12)
Special Education Interventionist K – 8

Even if your degree isn’t in one of these content areas, you are still able to enter the program. Job-embedded students must provide passing scores PRAXIS in their specialty area, all others must pass PRAXIS tests before clinical training.

All areas lead to initial licensure and will prepare you for life in the classroom. During this 36 or 38 semester-hour program, you’ll join a cohort of other industry leaders making the switch to teaching.

One Saturday a Month

In an effort to accommodate working adult schedules, the MAT program is offered in a hybrid format – allowing you the opportunity to complete you classes online with one day each month spent on campus.

Known as the Second Saturday program, students will complete assignments and discussion board forums online and spend the second Saturday each month on campus in Athens, TN. During this class time, students will have the opportunity to work together and meet with professors.

Program candidates entering the program for Elementary or Secondary Education will complete their studies in 36 semester-hours, while students in the Special Education specialization will complete the program in 38 semester-hours.

The Master of Arts in Teaching is approved by the Tennessee Department of Education as a pathway for initial licensure in elementary education, secondary education [biology, chemistry, English, history, or mathematics (6-12)] and special education interventionist (K-8).

TWU prepares students with the transformative experience and to be well-rounded leaders who make a positive impact on the world.
