Early Childhood Education, grades PreK-3

As an early childhood education student, you will learn about human growth and development, with a focus on children from birth to age eight. Classes will focus on the psychological and cognitive influences on learning and observe and analyze ways the social and cultural environments affect learning.

You will take classes including:

  • Developmental psychology
  • Cognitive psychology
  • Social problems
  • Math for elementary school teachers
  • Child, family and community studies
  • Instructional technology
  • Language and literacy development
  • Math, science and social studies methods
  • Survey of exceptional children

In addition to your classes, you will also spend a full semester student teaching in a local early childhood education center, providing you with hands-on practice and experience working with young children and enhancing your teaching skills. Upon completion of this degree, you will be eligible for Tennessee state teaching licensure in early childhood education, preK-3.
