Annual Lecture Series

The distinguished lecture is presented in honor of Dr. Morris D. Goodfriend (October 16, 1916 - September 13, 2013), a long-time community leader in Athens, Tennessee. He attended McMinn County High School and then graduated from Columbia Military Academy. He graduated from the University of Alabama where he earned a graduate degree in retail merchandising. He began his merchandising career in 1939 as an employee of Mandel Brothers Department Store.

Dr. Goodfriend served his country with honor and pride. He was called into service as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. Dr. Goodfriend was promoted to the rank of Captain. After the war, he continued in the Air Corps Reserve until 1957 when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Dr. Goodfriend started his long and successful career in his father's clothing store in 1947. In 1953 he and a partner opened the Athens outlet Store which grew to 383 stores known as Goody's Family Clothing. He later ran the business with his son, Robert M. Goodfriend, who joined him after college graduation in 1972.

Dr. Goodfriend received an honorary doctorate of public service from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1987. He was inducted into the "Community Hall of Fame" by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce on October 15, 1992.
