Bachelors in Biology Degree
Biology students champion the study of life by examining the cell as the basic unit of life, genes as the basis of inheritance, and evolution as the driving force for the creation of new species.
TWU’s biology bachelors degree provides a broad education in the field, with courses in various physical sciences to help support that work, and all courses are taught in the context of the liberal arts.
TWU Bachelors in Biology Emphasis
While a student in the biology program, you will take courses that allow you to understand the structure, function, growth, distribution and evolution of both living and extinct organisms. Through coursework and laboratory experiences, you will see how all organisms go through energy transformations to maintain a stable internal environment through changing external conditions.
In addition to the biology major, there are opportunities to pursue an emphasis in pre-professional studies, as well as majors in forensic science and general science. You may add a biology minor to any major.
Research opportunities are available through various faculty members in the department. Students can earn academic credit for this work and should discuss these possibilities with those faculty.
This department has, for many years, maintained an affiliation with the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) of the University of Southern Mississippi. GCRL is a marine / coastal research and education facility in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Through this relationship, TWU students can enroll in undergraduate field courses in marine biology and related subjects and gain TWU credit toward graduation. These credits can satisfy the natural sciences elective requirement. Scholarships are available through the generosity of a biology graduate of the college.
