Calculating Your TWU GPA

The grade point average, or GPA, is calculated by including all attempted course work that resulted in grades of A, B, C, D, F, WF, or I. Grades of P, AU, W, or WP are not included.

For each course, multiply the course grade value times the number of course semester hours to obtain the course quality points. (See chart of grade values below)

Total the quality points over all GPA courses.
Total the semester hours over all GPA courses.
Divide the total quality points by the total semester hours to obtain the GPA.

Divide total quality points by total credit hours:
29.99 ÷ 13 = 2.306 GPA

RETENTION STANDARDS

In order to be eligible for continued enrollment, a student must earn the cumulative grade point average set forth below for the cumulative number of semester hours attempted at Tennessee Wesleyan University:

RECOGNITION OF EXCEPTIONAL GRADES

Tennessee Wesleyan University issues an Honors List and a Dean’s List each semester in order to recognize academic achievements. To be eligible for the Honors List a student must be registered for 12 or more hours and attain a grade-point average of at least 3.70 with no grade below B. To be eligible for the Dean’s List a student must be registered for 12 or more hours and attain a grade-point average of at least 3.40 with no grade below C.

GPA FOR GRADUATION

To graduate from Tennessee Wesleyan University, a student must achieve a TWU GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, as well as a 2.0 in the major (and minor, if completed).

GRADUATING WITH HONORS

The following cumulative averages are required for graduation with honors:

Summa Cum Laude    3.80
Magna Cum Laude     3.60
Cum Laude                  3.40

Transfer students are eligible for honors provided that they meet the college’s residency regulations. They must also maintain, however, the average required for the expected honor on all work attempted at Tennessee Wesleyan University.

Students with a D or F on record (even if repeated with a higher grade or forgiven) are not eligible for Summa or Magna Cum Laude. Those students with a GPA of 3.60 or higher who have a D or F on record will graduate Cum Laude.
