The TWU program prepares graduates for entry level positions as dental hygienists. Students train to put theory into practice in a clinical setting.
The first two years focus on pre-professional general education. The final two years focus on the dental hygiene curriculum. The full-time only program begins in a student’s junior year. The application process is open from November-March of the sophomore year. Students must have a 2.5 GPA in their prerequisite coursework. Students who complete their general educational core at Tennessee Wesleyan receive priority.

Apply To The Program
The application cycle begins in August and ends in mid-March. The prerequisite coursework can be found here. Applicants must have all Scientific Perspectives, Written Word, Spoken Word, and Societal Perspectives courses completed before entering the program. Completion of all prerequisite coursework prior to entry into the program is strongly recommended. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required, however 3.0 and above is considered competitive.
In addition to the application, the following must be submitted to Admissions:
- Official college transcripts (including Dual Enrollment)
- Official high school transcript (if you went to high school in the state of Tennessee)
- 2 letters of reference (one professional, one academic)
- A personal statement
- Documentation of 16 observation hours of a dental hygienistcompleted within a year of the application date
Applicants are scored based on science GPA, overall GPA, and the number of outstanding prerequisite courses at the time of application. Current TWU students are awarded additional points. The 30 top applicants are invited to an interview with the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee. The maximum number of students accepted each year is 24.

The mission of the TWU Department of Dental Hygiene is to create an environment where clinically exceptional dental hygienists who are knowledgeable, confident, conscientious, compassionate, ethical, professional in appearance and behavior, and active within the professional community are born. Dental Hygiene Clinic Info
Located alongside the dental hygiene academic workspace is our dental clinic. The newly renovated space on the TWU Athens campus provides the opportunity for students to learn through hands-on experience by serving members of the Tennessee Wesleyan and Athens communities.
Clinic Fast Facts:
- The dental hygiene facility is newly updated and includes the clinic, lab, and classroom.
- The clinic contains 13 operatories and is equipped with chairside computers, intraoral cameras, and digital radiography.
- Students provide services to adults and children age 3 and up.
- Appointments are scheduled at either 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM. Because this is an educational facility, appointments may be up to 3.5 hours in length and patients may require more than one appointment to complete treatment.
- Students are penalized for loss of production due to broken appointments, so please be courteous and give proper notice in order for the student to secure another patient. Patients should kindly provide at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations.
- A board certified dentist is on site to provide examinations and referrals.

What is a Dental Hygienist?
Registered Dental Hygienists provide dental health education, prevent and treat oral disease, promote and encourage the preventive aspects of dental care, and assume responsibility for patient care in the dental office. They are graduates of dental hygiene education programs in community colleges, colleges, and universities. They are required to take written and clinical examinations before they are allowed to practice. Besides working in a private dental practice, dental hygienists also work as educators, administrators, researchers and entrepreneurs.

A career as a dental hygienist offers a wide range of challenges. In the dental office, the dentist and the dental hygienist work together to meet the oral health needs of patients. Since each state has its own specific regulations regarding their responsibilities, the range of services performed by hygienists varies from state to state. Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:
- patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse
- taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays)
- removing calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth
- applying preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides)
- teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;
(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling) - counseling patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health
- making impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs)

Due to the success of preventive dentistry in reducing the incidence of oral disease, the expanding older population will retain their teeth longer, and will be even more aware of the importance of regular dental care. With the emphasis on preventive care, dentists will need to employ more dental hygienists than ever before to meet the increased demand for dental services.

Hygienists are in demand in general dental practices and in specialty practices such as periodontics or pediatric dentistry. They also may be employed to provide dental hygiene services for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and public health clinics.
Depending upon the level of education and experience achieved, dental hygienists can apply their skills and knowledge to other career activities such as teaching hygiene students in dental schools and dental hygiene education programs. Research, office management and business administration are other career options. Employment opportunities also may be available with companies that market dental-related materials and equipment.

- Apply fluorides and other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay.

Blood Borne Pathogen Statement
All applicants must be aware that the activities required for both the TWU Dental Hygiene Program and the profession of dental hygiene, require the student/professional to participate in procedures that place the clinician at risk for blood borne pathogens.
FAQ
- Do I rent or buy my instruments? Students will pay a one-time instrument kit fee of $5000 at the beginning of their junior year. This fee covers the purchase of all instruments, including an ultrasonic scaler and handpiece, loupes, a typodont, DH apparel, and SADHA dues for two years.
- What is a typical DH class schedule? Junior DH students are usually in class from 8 AM-4 PM three days per week, and lab/clinic from 7:30 AM-3 PM or 7:30 AM -5 PM one to two days per week, depending on the semester. Senior students are in clinic two to three days per week, and classes one to two days per week, depending on the semester.
- How long is the program? It is 5 semesters: Fall, spring, summer, fall, spring.
- Is there a dress code? DH students are required to wear scrubs each day to class or clinic.
- Are students required to provide their own clinic patients? Students are responsible for filling their clinic schedule. However, the DH administrative Assistant schedules patients who request an appointment. Because students treat both new and recare patients, a recare list of established patients is available for student use. Typically, students will schedule their friends and family in the clinic to help fill their schedule.
